This amateur footage shows crowds demonstrating in the city of Daraa. The clashes came when security forces opened fire on people throwing stones.
State television in Syria has until now ignored the unrest, insisting that the country was calm. But for the first time it has now broadcast film of people lurking behind a hedge, who were described as "vandals."
