Cote D'Ivoire: Fighting Intensifies in Abidjan

(Al Jazeera English: 0712 PST, April 4, 2011) In Cote D'Ivoire, the Prime Minister appointed by internationally recognised president, Alassane Outtara, has said the time is right for a "rapid offensive" against the main city of Abidjan. Ouattara's forces are fighting soldiers loyal to incumbent president Laurent Gbagbo in what could be a decisive day in the future of the country. Al Jazeera's Nazanin Sadri reports.

Pro-Ouattara Fighters Enter Abidjan

(Al Jazeera English: 2157 PST, March 31, 2011) Fighters backing Cote D'Ivoire's elected president Alassane Ouattara, are attacking the residence of the incumbent, Laurent Gbagbo, in the city of Abidjan. A spokesman for Ouattara says they are meeting some resistance.

 

Ouattara's forces swept into the commercial capital on Thursday, and have also taken control of the state TV broadcaster. Gbagbo has refused to give up power despite losing last November's election, according to results verified by local and international officials. Al Jazeera's Khadija Margadie reports.

Egyptian Presidential Poll Due by End of Year

(Euronews: 0148 PST, March 31, 2011) Egypt is set to vote for a new president by the end of the year. The announcement was made by the ruling military council which has held power since Hosni Mubarak was ousted by a mass uprising in February.

 

The Supreme Council of the Armed Forces said it would cede legislative powers to a new parliament once it is elected in September. The presidential poll would take place a month or two later.

Cote d'Ivoire: Ouattara Loyalists Seize Capital

(France 24: 0547 PST, March 31, 2011) Forces loyal to Cote d'Ivoire's internationally recognized president, Alassane Ouattara, have seized the country's administrative capital, Yamoussoukro, and threatened to march onto the main city of Abidjan.

Armed Ivorian Opponents Gang Up on Gbagbo

(Euronews: 0547 PST, March 29, 2011) Gunmen fighting Ivory Coast's incumbent president Laurent Gbagbo have been patrolling the streets of Abobo, Abidjan. Known as the 'invisible commandos', the militia control large parts of the city. Gbagbo is also struggling to contain a separate rebel advance from the north.

 

Forces loyal to Gbagbo's electoral rival Alassane Ouattara have now reportedly seized the towns of Duekoue, Daloa, and Bondoukou after opening several fresh military fronts from their northern powerbase.
