Oman Unrest Enters Third Day

(Euronews: 0724 PST, February 28, 2011) Protesters in Oman have clashed with security forces during a third consecutive day of unrest. The demonstrators want higher salaries and a greater say in the running of the country's affairs. Oman has been ruled by a family dynasty since 1932.

 

This amateur footage shows violent clashes from Sunday. The government says one person died, although doctors told the Reuters news agency that at least six people lost their lives and 20 people were wounded.

Libya: Benghazi Braces for Attack as Gaddafi Digs In

Uprising Spreads Further Across Libya

(Euronews: 0200 PST, February 28, 2011) Libya's uprising is moving ever closer to Tripoli with rebels taking Zawiyah. There are reports that troops loyal to Gaddafi are waiting to launch a counter-attack. Zawiyah's strategic significance lies in it being only 50 kilometres from the Libyan leader's stronghold in the capital Tripoli.

 

But each gain for the rebels has not been without cost. Fierce fighting has left an unconfirmed number dead. A doctor told reporters that he had been in Zawiyah for three days and he had seen 24 people shot dead.

 

 

Tobruk's People - Driven to Rebel

(Euronews: 0200 PST, February 28, 2011) Although Tobruk is an impoverished city it has a reputation for being a bastion of resistance. In the last century Tobruk was the final town to fall under the control of an Italian colonial administration. One local resident said: "This time the revolution was sparked for economic reasons as well as the absence of free of speech, the situation of the country was in a deplorable state." As the fight continued the city's prison was raised to the ground.

Tunisia PM Announces Resignation

(Al Jazeera English: 0900 PST, February 27, 2011)  Mohammed Ghannouchi says he will step down following deaths during anti-government protests. Mohammed Ghannouchi, Tunisia's interim prime minister, has resigned, as security forces clashed with protesters in Tunis, the capital, who were demanding some of his minsters be removed. (Euronews: 1130 PST, February 27, 2011) The Tunisian Prime Minister has announced resignation following a series of street protests. Mohamed Ghannouchi said by stepping aside he will provide a better atmosphere for a new era. He added that he wants to prevent more victims in the country's political unrest. Critics have accused Ghannouchi of being too close to the previous regime. That criticism turned to violent street protests in the centre of the capital Tunis on Friday and Saturday.

(Euronews: February 20, 2011) Tunisia's former president, Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, stashed cash, gold, diamonds, and other precious items in secret spots in his palace in Tunis, according to state television. He was overthrown last month after 23 years of authoritarian rule.

(Al Jazeera English: February 19, 2011) Villagers in the highlands of Jolochitan in Guerrero, Mexico have established a DIY system for local policing that is proving effective. The southwestern state of Guerrero has long fought a battle with guerrilla fighters.

 

 

Tiger Escapes at Tokyo Zoo

(ITN News: February 22, 2011) Zookeeper Shuuhei Yamaguchi donned a tiger costume to help fellow Tokyo Zoo staff practice a tiger escape emergency drill. It took the staff an hour to recapture him.
