Foreign Powers Plan Libya Response

Contrasting reports on the possibility of foreign military intervention in Libya.

(Euronews: 0724 PST, March 4, 2011) With two US warships already in the Suez Canal, Washington has the military capability to respond quickly in Libya should it need to. Talks continue regarding the right international response to the situation, as fighting rages on between rebels and pro-Gaddafi forces.

Britain and France also have troops and equipment in the region. Much of this is at NATO bases, though NATO itself has said will not be using military force against Libya.

On the Edge: Intervention Fears Rise as Forces Mass Near Libya

(Russia Today: 0753 PST, March 4, 2011) The U.S. and UK are becoming more isolated as they refuse to rule out intervention in Libya. Germany has joined international voices opposing any foreign military action. Washington, massing its forces off the Libyan coast, claims its keeping all options open and is ready to step in if the crisis deepens.

The area just across the sea from Libya is turning into a launch site for possible military intervention. Four hundred American marines have landed in Crete to provide President Obama with more flexibility regarding his approach to Libya. While at the same time, Britain is considering sending typhoon fighters to Cyprus if a no-fly zone is given the green light.
