Okay so its not exactly “The War” for progressives but it can be seen as our very own historical account of the rise of poltical protest in this country. Starting as far back as the Free Speech Movement when police were hosing down students who looked liked they walked off the set of Ozzie and Harriet, this film does the miraculous job of being comprehensive AND entertaining. And although it doesn’t gloss over the contradictions in various movements it remains uplifting –thansk in part to a great musical track and some anazing footage. All the interviewees were articulate and sometimes even poetic in their description of the encounters with the armed guard and police. I began to get envious of not ever getting hosed down by the cops for anything.
I have to admit , I didn’t know who Mario Savio was (the leader of the Free Speech Movement) – but watching his speech where he says ‘There are times when the operations of the machine become so odious you just have to do something.’ I was so moved – Damn there was a time when people really gave a sh*t !
and the Bobby Seale interviews are pretty funny..
