Finally manged to see it.
What a beautifully made, but very sad tale.
Such a shame that the father(the Rabbi)was SO absorbed in the tales of the past, and the unseen dreams of the future, that he totally missed what God really wanted him to SEE,and devote himself to.
HIS OWN VISIBLE FLESH AND BLOOD SON!
The father was so focused on being a good son of God,who DIDN'T need him so much, that he abandoned his focus on his tiny mortal son,who DID NEED HIM,SO MUCH,and loved him unconditionally.
Conditional love to an unseen greater power, that doesn't need you-
versus the unconditional love of a dependant visible fragility, that DOES need you.

Very poignant, that throughout the film, the view that the boy had of his father, most of the time, was his BACK,as his father chose to face AWAY,to something he couldn't actually see.
In the rabbis devotion to his unseen "father and Lord",he neglected the little son's devotion to his flesh and blood "father" and "lord" (the rabbi).
Like the ultimate pointless sacrifice of a father, risking his son's death, for God,who actually wants the father, instead,to nurture his son as his greatest gift to God.
Like the words of Jesus in his desperation and loneliness,"Father, why hast thou forsaken me?"
And the sad metaphor of the rabbi's insistence of pushing the mother bird away from her babies in the nest(who needed her)and not thinking of the pain and sadness of the mother bird, was just like the boy's mother, being distanced from her son, while the father demanded his devotion to God.So while the mother bird was away, her chicks died of neglect, just as the son did,and she blamed herself for not defending his need for actual maternal love, instead of mythical paternal rite.
The sound track to the film was beautiful and soulful too.
Politically very poignant too,in today's sad circumstances.
