You should read Another American Century?: The United States and the World After 2000, by Nicholas Guyatt, which was written around 2000, so before 9/11. (Note the author has done a follow up written in 2003, but I have not read that one yet).
It explains American foreign policy between 1990 and 2000.
If you had read it, you would have figured out what you just did from the start.
But I don't think Russia having money to develop its own military power was taken into account. There is no need of Russia to feed the military-industrial complex. Just being at war in the middle east is enough.
I think Russia starting to be strong again is a side effect that was not anticipated. And the growing alliance between Russia and Iran (and China too) is starting to treaten The neo-con Hegemonic plan. The latest Caspian meeting is a sign of it. And I hope it also sends a message strong enough to prevent an attack on Iran. I prefer a cold war over a real one.
I agree completely. Also I would add that as today a barrel of oil is already $90+. Also, to "justify" our invasion in Iraq, there was staged 9/11 "attack", where has been sacrificed thousands of lives, that there were no proofs that pentagon has been hit by airplane. Check out google video "9/11 Mysteries" where you can find a mind blowing information from well known american scientists.
Not all steps are justifiable to fill pockets with money!
Don't you think so?
Well, it has taken a looong time, but thanks to a comment from Gary Kasparov on Bill Maher's show Friday night, I believe I have finally figured out why we are in Iraq.
First, a couple of facts: With the collapse of the Soviet Union, the Cold War ended and in the US, we enjoyed a "peace dividend" as military spending was cut significantly during the Clinton administration. With oil at $18 a barrel the month before we invaded Iraq, there were two powerful corporate areas that were suffering: the military-industrial complex and the oil companies. Russia was no threat, as they had no funding source for their military. Then, we invaded Iraq. Aside from the horror of an unnecessary war amd the completely unwarranted killing of hundreds of thousands of Iraqis and the displacement of millions more, the deaths of thousands of US and "coalition" servicepersons (and other negative Middle East ramifications), the most significant consequences are not yet widely appreciated.
First, of course, is the price of oil, hovering around $88 a barrel today. Probably the most minor consequence of this is higher gas prices here in the US. That means record profits for the oil companies - so they are happy with the status quo (US troops in Iraq, and increased Mid-East instability). But another major conseqwuence is that Russia, a major oil exporter, suddenly has the means to fund an enormous military buildup - developing new missiles and bombs, strengthening and overhauling their military, and reassuming a major-power role in the world, often in opposition to the US.
Who benefits from this? The military-industrial complex, that's who. Even if a Democratic administration is elected in 2008, even if they have huge majorities in Congress, it's going to be tough, if not impossible, to cut US military spending in the face of a rekindled Russian threat.
