Gravestones of Democracy
A great philosopher once said, that democracy is the worst form of government, but he also said he wouldn’t know a better one.
This statement is remarkable, because it describes in one sentence the up- and downside of democracy. Democracy could actually be the best form of government, if the will of the people would be respected. On the other hand democracy is the worst form of government, because the system can be so easily manipulated. And it can be so easily manipulated because the representatives, whatever title they might carry, have only one character trait, have only one single thing in mind and that is to do whatever needs to be done to make them and certain others richer, more powerful and more in control.
The idea of democracy, as I understand it, is that it is supposed to be a bottom-up situation, where a sort of grassroots movement selects by majority vote the representatives, which are then given the power to execute the will of the people.
Looking at any so called democracy worldwide and using my best will to see the positive side, I can only see top-down systems, admittedly with a different degree of steepness. These governments do still carry the name democratic, because it must have been sometime in the past written down in their founding documents and constitutions. But if one looks at their working mechanisms, they do ressemble those of dictatory systems.
The whole attitude of the representatives is reflecting their, let’s say, non-democratic way of thinking. Where is the gratefulness and committment of the politicians towards the people who gave them the power? Where is the truth of the spoken word, where the transparency and visibility of the real issues? The real issues are covered-up, discussed and decided behind closed doors, put under national security seal, and are made artificially complicated and inflated, - basically they are put beyond the reach of the people, who are the very subject to these issues.
Every few years the people are given their right to vote. But what can they vote on? The choice is between two or three parties, who have not much difference in their agenda, and don’t respect their agenda anyways. Their agendas are more like sales brochures, underlining what people like to see underlined, - with a lot of fine print, that people can’t read, because the print is too fine, that people can’t understand, because it’s spelled out in terms only experts can understand and because there is no obligation to display a disclaimer, that would say: The actual product you receive is subject to change and very likely not the product displayed here. There will be no guarantee or warranty whatsoever expressed or implied, and sorry, we don’t issue refunds. This is the true picture of today’s democracy.
If you are hesitant about this statement, allow me to up the ante. Why is today’s session called Gravestones of Democracy? If the tombstones of JFK and Dr. Martin Luther King are not tall enough, if you ask for even taller ones, tombstones that are so huge, that even blind people would be able to see, then take a trip to New York City and ask the firefighters for 911 truth about their opinion what happened or ask the architects and engineers for 911 truth about their analysis, based on facts, how the 2, no the 3 buildings have been brought down in September of the Year 2001.
The rubble of the 3 buildings, burying almost pulverized remains of over 3000 innocent citizens, are the true gravestones of our esteemed democracy.
The following, unjustified IRAQ war causing civilian casualities in excess of 1 million, symbolizes another true gravestone of our esteemed democracy.
I think one moment of silence here is in order.
I have to ask you to please accept my apologies. It is not my intention to enter the arena of politics, for my real interests lie in meditation and philosphy, in life itself and how we can become better human beings. But when the political powers turn into powers that are able to commit crimes of that magnitude without being brought to justice, at all, I feel the need to cross the border and get involved.
Since each of us seems to be powerless in light of global happenings, we tend to create our own little safe haven, our home sweet home, where everything is alright. But if you don’t speak up, others won’t speak up as well and the crimes on the street, on main street and on wall street will continue to get bigger and bigger, until one day, not too far in the future, it will be too late to act.
How you think and act in your life makes all the difference. It starts with you and your relationhip with your family, friends, neighbors and co-workers. If you let anything happen in your environment, even on a very small scale, that you don’t want to happen in politics and society, then don’t be surprised that it actually will happen on a very large scale.
Your thoughts and actions, along with those of others make up the unwritten group and society policies that are out there and that have, combined together, so much influence how everybody behaves. It’s the - you should do this or you can’t do that which rule and you have a part in it how they look like. The more you speak up they greater is the chnace they will change. Take leadership, based on truth, logic and your principles.
May the higher spirit help us evolve.
Yours truly,
Mon Rasz
