I was very pleased to see the Palestinians enjog their moment of freedom.
BUT,it did upset me to see the Palestinians throwing rocks at the Egyptian security guards who HAVE TO look after the legal border. The Palestinians have had ENOUGH noxious agro from the Israeli human-rights abusers,so the last thing we want to see is Palestinins and Egyptians at each others throats.I'm glad that Hamas decided to ASSIST the Egyptian security forces in rebuilding the border,it shows mutual respect and is a better ground for establishing a working, legal, secure and crossable National border, for BOTH sides.
Palestinians and Egyptians! Boys, don't throw stones at each other! Enjoy each others company!
Gazans managed to bring down the wall at least temporarily which tells you that oppression will not last. The Berlin Wall came down crumbling and Israel's Apartheid Wall will also fall. It's a matter of time. Enough is enough.
Yes debois,I agree with you and I do remember that Hamas was elected fairly and as 'transparently' as possible with a great DEAL of effort and running around by Jimmy Carter and team who were determined that the IDF would not block the Palestinians from casting their votes on their own land by using the web of occupiers bureacracy. It's quite ironical that many of the Israeli leaders in modern history(1930's onward)were first associated with 'terrorist'or 'dissident' groups ALSO "defending" what they considered theirs. And then they turn around and label others for doing THE SAME! LOL!
And what is happening now to the Palestinians is being watched by everyone and abhorred. The Palestinian people(and many many American people)can share at least one definate positive,Bush and Olmert are on the tail-end of their dreaded terms of(war-mongering)office!!! And those that really seek peace will STILL BE AROUND!
I would still like to see a mutual cease-fire RIGHT NOW,it's difficult to have two-way dialogue when bombs and rockets are blasting ones ear-drums out.All sides must concede that they are at least capable of peaceful and dignified dialogue.
Peace,Salaam,Shalom!
When the Palestinians agreed to hold elections Hamas won handily. The elections were monitored by the international community which included Jimmy Carter who stated that they were "transparent." This has spoiled the plans hatched by Fatah led by Abbas, Israel (Olmert) and the US (Bush). The grand scheme was to have the Palestinians accept the Apartheid Wall which Israel was constructing as the final borders of the Palestinian State and deny the Palestinian refugees the right of return as provided to them by ALL UN resolutions.
Hamas' victory stunned the conspirators who in return created an international campaign to isolate and vilify Hamas driving them to a coup d'etat in Gaza. What's happening now is a result of this conspiracy and the Palestinian people are the ultimate losers due to Bush, Olmert and their puppet Abbas.
I really think that Hamas,Israel and the P.A. should commit to a mutual cease-fire first,in order to allow ANY kind of dialogue to start which could, hopefully, lead to a fair and equally respectful peace pact.
If both sides REALLY care about a future filled with peace and dignity for all, they BOTH must pop their past bitternesses in their pockets,at least(if they can't trash them completely)and find all the COMMON ground that they share, including stolen lands.
If they don't concentrate on rock solid REAL ground now, there won't be ANY SOLID healthy ground in the future to build and work on to sustain EITHER SIDE.
As for Bush,I as an American, don't think he deserves the distinction of claiming that honour of 'Peace Broker'.If he SERIOUSLY cared about mutual and equivalent peace in the Near-East,he would have dived into that 'mission'in 2000! But he obviously had other plans!
If he is talking of a peace treaty soon, that depends on the terms of the treaty. What may be peace to one,may well remain oppression for another and visa versa. And Bush is not independant enough to make sure that universal human rights are observed by ALL equally!
Sorry Bush, but it doesn't matter,to me,WHAT you say, where you go or WHO you shake hands with now. You shredded your crediblity long ago at the expense of America's reputation.Just quietly do your time, and bow out with what dignity you have left.
Personally,I think 'Arbusto's actions have ALREADY spoken for him. So,his words now are just speeches written by paid employees.
If Israel,Hamas and the P.A. can agree to a cease fire to facilitate REAL peace talks, that would be a GREAT,NOBLE AND SPIRITUAL MOVE!
Lay down the weapons and get talking over the coffee/tea pots!
Peace,Salaam,Shalom!
In Jerusalem, at the start of his trip, a confident Bush predicted that a peace treaty would be signed by the time he leaves office in January 2009.
The realities on the ground point elsewhere. Before Bush could declare another “Mission Accomplished” moment, violence erupted between Palestinians and Israelis on the Gaza front, reaching its peak on Tuesday when Israeli troops killed 19 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. Meanwhile, Hamas members fired some 40 Qassam rockets and two mortar shells at the western Negev on Thursday, lightly wounding two Israelis and causing several others to be treated for shock.
