Arab Disunity

Syria has accused the United States of trying to torpedo the Arab summit in Damascus; in reality, Arabs have torpedoed their own summit in a show of disunity lead by the Saudis. Egypt and Saudi Arabia will be sending low level representatives to Damascus and now it seems that Jordan will follow suit. Lebanon has simply snubbed Syria and will not be sending any delegates.

I feel bad for the Syrians and all the work they’ve put in to decorate the main road leading to Damascus from the airport with flags representing 22 Arab countries, and banners of, “Arab Unity” and “Twenty Two Countries, One Nation.” Then, there is the smiling face of Bashar Al Assad…waving to me as I was heading to the Jordanian border. I bet that he is not smiling any more. I also bet that the Syrian media will declare the summit a great success.

P.S.

Syria is cracking down more on internet use, blocking YouTube and websites deemed harmful to state security. Owners of internet cafes are now required to keep detailed logs of their customers.
