The world needs a new 'GLOBAL LEAGUE OF NATIONS',where NO ONE nation has VETO power. All Nations must respect and accept the majority vote.
And every Nation is OBLIGED to vote,rather than ABSTAIN.

Hey Statesman, regarding the UN, I think it is a paralyzed institution since its birth, and simply allowing big powers to veto and block any resolution even if the rest of the world demanding for it. A real reform to UN would mean a complete new UN. That dose not mean the UN did not do any good, but for example if you look how US manipulated the UN to prepare the occupation of Iraq and later marginalized it unless US needed it to clean their mess, this is not a paralyzed roll and also a negative one by allowing US to used UN bureaucracy, and there are hundreds of this example. I believe that Amnesty Intentional and Human Rights groups are more accurate and fair, but unfortunately they are powerless like the UN. Also if i were in your shoes I would keep the State Department as an option, because WE NEED GOOD PEOPLE THERE TO SPEAK UP AND SAY: THESE ARE BAD POLICIES.

Does anyone believe that it is possible to "reform" the United Nations to actually have a stand against governments that are doing wrong to a people? What I am trying to say is that there seems to me to be a growing movement by certain governments to allow wrong doing in the world.

I was thinking of working for the State Department when I graduate from college but after this little episode in the Middle East, I would like to work at the United Nations. My whole thing is that I am a man of peace and I believe deeply that there can be a peace between nations in the Middle East but after all of the education that I receive I don't want to work for some crappy organization that talks the talk but doesn't walk the walk.

I believe that sometimes there needs to be an international organization that is for peace but also that has military backing to slap some despotic country around when they are oppressing a people. The U.S. government, in my opinion, is a load of horse shit and this is why I have opted out of working for any U.S. government organization.

I am looking for some type of IGO that will stand up against tyranny and oppression but I wonder if the United Nations is what I am looking for.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Hamas is becoming a symbol of heroic persistence. Its combatants on the ground fight almost with bare hands against America's most lethal technology. Similarly, Hamas'political leadership has managed to set itself as the key to any possible resolution of the current conflict.

The hope that Hamas would be toppled or discredited proved to be just another Jewish wet dream. Hamas is now becoming a widely accepted entity by the international community. It is regarded as an elementary ingredient in any possible solution.

Israel, on the other hand, is seen for what it is for real, a murderous criminal state involved in genocidal war crimes of the worst order.

The IDF, so it seems, finished its role in Gaza. It turned its neighbourhoods into piles of rubble. Relentlessly, it even murdered the civilian population in broad daylight by means of air raids and attacks from warships.

Images of white phosphorus artillery shells bursting over schools and hospitals are now part of our collective memory. Tanks firing into schools loaded with evacuees seeking refuge from the bombing of their buildings is now the image associated with the Hebraic soldier and yet, the Israelis failed to achieve any of their objectives.

I must admit that it must take a special talent to be an Israeli general. As much as they are good in committing war crimes, they somehow fail in everything else.

statesman:Gaza is ONE BIG concentration camp.The ISRAELIS 'designed' it to be that way,to BREAK the people,physically,psychologically,emotionally,spiritually.
But,it hasn't broken them.It has just MADE THEM HATE the ISRAELIS more and more.
So,if 2/3rds OF THE WORLD hate the Israelis,there is GOOD valid reason for it.
The walls around Gaza,are the CLOSED Rafah crossing(South).
The sea shore(West) patrolled ILLEGALLY by fully armed and offensive Israeli WARSHIPS,with missiles,plus coast guard with high pressure water cannons laced with all sorts of chemicals in to burn the skin and eyes.The Palestinian fishing boats are CONSTANTLY wrecked by the Israelis,The beaches/sand is COVERED with oil/sludge/sewage.
To the north,there are multiple armed checkpoints,razor-wire fences,trenches,tanks,sniper-towers.
To the east there are armed forces,sniper towers,fences,checkpoints and the armed forces in the Negev(plus all the nuclear waste buried underground.
And the SKY is patrolled constantly by blimps,armed jets(F-16's),armed Apache helos,sonic bombs,tear gas,white phosphorous now,armed Predator Drones.
AND THE West Bank?
Well that occupied area is riddled with an ILLEGAL snake of an ILLEGAL concrete wall/barbed wire fence,which is 3 TIMES the length of the actual boundary of the West Bank.And the people have to SUFFER with manic,lunatic,fundamentalist armed settlers,who are worse than rabid animals.
Those Palestinian people have to live in WORSE prison camp/POW situations than I ever had(x three) in WW2,from which we CONSTANTLY attempted to escape from,AND DID,and we were treated better(but still not good)by OUR enemy captors.
We NEVER succumbed to enprisonment.It was the PRIORITY of all,to defend your freedoms. Always the code:Live Free or Die but never accept enclosed existence.

As a WW2-Vet Officer,I would NEVER hold ENEMY prisoners in the same inhumane,degrading,savage conditions that the Israelis subject the Palestinian men,women and children to EVERY SINGLE DAY!
Because I could never FORGIVE myself,excuse myself,justify it,and I know GOD would NEVER forgive me.I could NEVER hold my head up in honor again!

Hamas,is ONLY a SMALL/HANDFUL,relatively speaking,group of guerrilla freedom fighters(also the ELECTED POLITICALLY PARTY)trying to defend their 1 million+++ ordinary Palestinian peace-loving people,in Gaza alone(not even counting the West Bank people).The Palestinian people have NO-ONE ELSE to defend their FREEDOMS,RIGHTS,HISTORY,LAND,DIGNITY.
We are ALL equal in the eyes of GOD,and as humans,we should NEVER treat are fellow human beings like this.
