Naked America: Paying for Nuclear Disaster

Going without insurance is described as "going naked" in the insurance industry. And going without insurance for the worst hazards in the US nuclear power industry is business as usual. The Fukushima-Daiichi nuclear power plant disaster in March, 2011, caused an estimated $250 billion in damages and cost are still mounting. If a Fukushima-type nuclear accident happened in the United States, you the taxpayer may end up picking up the tab.There are 104 nuclear power plants in the United States spread across 31 states. They produce 20 percent of our electrical power. They all carry insurance against a nuclear accident. But that insurance is limited to $12.6 billion. Experts say that damage from a nuclear accent could run as much as $500 billion or more. So if a disaster would cost hundreds of billions, why the the liability cap for insurance only $12.6 billion? Correspondent Miles Benson investigates.
