Immigration, Borders

Immigration, Borders

(May 14, 2007) Segment 1: Immigration is a big issue nowadays in the US. It is subject that usually grabs headlines on both sides of the isle as we approach the election cycle. This year is now exception. We will see why President Bush calls illegal immigrants "criminals", and what is being proposed to stem the flow of undocumented aliens across the border. We will also explore this subject from a Latin American perspective. Are illegal immigrants an export commodity that in turn generate billions of dollars in remittances for their mother countries, or are they really economic of political refugees in search of a better life for their families? Segment 2: Borders Border conflicts are practically a way of life in Latin America. There is always frictions that arise between neighbors, be them historical border disputes or new ones that come up for new reasons. Are these real issues that need to be resolved in the political arena, or are they fictional conflicts created to distract public opinion from the real issues? We take a closer look at border conflicts and discuss this issue in depth in this week's episode of Latin Pulse.
