Massacre at Fort Hood
Al Jazeera TV, QatarPresenter, Male #1
The toll of the Fort Hood military base shooting has risen to 13 death and more than 28 injuries. According to official statements, the shooter is a military psychiatrist by the name of Nidal Malik Hasan, who was injured during the incident by several bullets but is now in stable condition. American-Muslim associations condemned the shooting, which Obama described as horrific, especially considering that it happened in the largest American military base.
Reporter, Female # 1
This is one of the worst days in the history of Fort Hood, the largest American military base. The shooting by military psychiatrist Nidal Malik Hasan killed more than 13 soldiers and injured 30 others. The incident took place at the medical and dental treatment processing center, which soldiers visit before being deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan. There were contradictory news reports, but now we have an official account of Nidal’s situation.
Guest, Male # 2
The investigation is ongoing. Initial reports indicated that the person who did the shooting is one man who was wounded by multiple gun shots. As was have said before, he did not die and is now under arrest and in a stable condition.
Reporter, Female # 2
The real motivations behind the shooting are not clear yet. So far the information available about Nidal is that he is 39 years old, and was born in Virginia where he completed his university education. The media focused on the Palestinian origin of his parents and his Islamic faith. It is said that the doctor who did the shooting had hired a lawyer to end his service in the army, and that he was opposed to being sent to Iraq. American and Muslim communities quickly condemned the attack before being subjected to possible attacks by the media.
Guest, Male # 3
We, the American society, have always been like one family in times of crisis. We want to be a good American family whose members stand by each other, not against one another.
Reporter, Female # 2
As controversy and shock continues at the Fort Hood military base, the home of 50,000 soldiers, others expressed different views about the perpetrator.
Guest, Male # 4
He used to talk to me every morning and evening whenever he would see me. He was a very good person. He gave me many books as gifts, including scientific ones. He is an excellent person.
Reporter, Female # 2
Regardless of the details of the incident which may emerge in the future, there is no doubt that this incident does not serve the American President’s efforts aimed at convincing the American public to send more troops to Afghanistan. The suicide rate among American soldiers exceeds that among civilians. Last year, there was 120 suicide cases in the Army, most of which took place in Fort Hood, which has the largest number of American soldiers deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan.
Guest, Male # 5 (Obama)
It is difficult enough to loose these courageous Americans in battles outside the homeland. It is horrific that they were shot in an American military base, in America.
Reporter, Female # 2
What happened at the Fort Hood military base does not set a precedent in the history of the American army. Soldiers have shot their colleagues in the past. The question is, will the investigations focus primarily on his actions or will they focus just on his name?
Humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan grows
BBC- ArabicPresenter, Male #1
The Head of the United Nations delegation in Afghanistan, Kai Eide, said that the UN is determined to increase the number of its employees in Afghanistan. Several days ago, 5 foreign UN workers were killed in an attack on a hotel in Kabul. Our correspondent in Kabul Abdul Rahmin al-Faris visited one of the refugee camps and brought us the following report.
Reporter, Male #1
Mohammed Goul is going through his usual route to reach his hut in the refugee camp of Pashtun in Helmand, southern Afghanistan. These camps are where refugees are currently living across Kabul. He did not hesitate to invite us to see his difficult living conditions. This dough is for feeding more than 10 people. The hardship of living here has forced the little ones to share the burden of their parents. For Mohammed Goul, politics and those who make political decisions, whether they are native Afghans or foreigners, doesn’t matter much to him.
Guest, Male #1
Nothing helped us, not the UN, the US, or the Afghan government. We are like blind people who don’t know their own fate.
Reporter, Male #1
While Goul does not know his fate, the UN has decided the fate of hundreds of its foreign employees in Afghanistan.
Guest, Male #2
In the short term, we will send back 12% of our foreign employees to Afghanistan. Most of them will do supportive work; they are not in the frontline of the conflict.
Reporter, Male #1
This decision came a week after 5 international workers were killed in one of the guest houses in Kabul. The attack was carried out by two suicide bombers, a tactic that the Taliban has adopted to fight the government and Western forces in the country. Perhaps the group that is most glad about the UN’s decision to re-deploy its foreign employees in Afghanistan is the one that ordered the two young men to attack this building and kill 5 foreign workers staying in it. The attack did not only aim to kill, but also to threaten the UN and force it to withdraw the positions it has taken in Afghanistan. Abdul Rahim al-Farisi, BBC, Kabul.
Khatemi's supporters arrested
Al Arabiya TV, UAEPresenter, Male #1
Iranian authorities arrested, Hossein Hajibiyan and Hijatallah Sharifi, two prominent members of the reformist Islamic Iran Participation Front which is close to former president Mohammed Khatami. 35 Participation Front members have been arrested so far.
Reporter, Male #2
While the dust recedes following the demonstrations marking the anniversary of the US Embassy takeover, conservative hardliners returned to strongly demand the arrest of the reformist leaders. This came despite the official media’s attempts to downplay the importance of the participation of supporters of the reformists in the demonstrations, saying it had little influence and was small in size. Hardliner newspaper Kayhan attacked two reformist leaders, Mir-Hossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi for their support of the protesters, and called them “hooligans”. The newspaper confirmed that several prominent student leaders were detained during the demonstrations, and claimed that Moussavi and Karroubi had been arrested as well. Kayhan newspaper considered these arrests the most effective action against the reform movement. But the reformists’ websites stressed that these arrests will only make them more persistent to hold their protests in future national events, and that they have already started planning new demonstrations on “Student Day”, in about a month. The number of participants in the demonstrations marking the US Embassy takeover, the way that the protesters confronted the crackdown, and the slogans that were chanted
Qatar mediates between Saudi Arabia & Iran
Dubai TV, UAEPresenter, Woman # 1
The visit of Qatar’s ruler Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa to Tehran raised questions as to whether Qatar is trying to mediate between Saudi Arabia and Iran. During the visit, Iranian and Qatari officials talked about issues pertaining to the region in general. The meeting comes at a time when Iran is trying to adopt a policy of openness with its neighboring Arab countries as a way to protect itself from Western threats. Our correspondent Rehdha el-Basha reports from Tehran.
Reporter, Man # 1
Intensive diplomatic maneuvers are ongoing in Tehran, including some carried out by high caliber officials, raising questions about whether Qatar is trying to mediate between Iran and Saudi Arabia. Qatari ruler, Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani led a delegation of senior officials to Iran. Doha has good relations with the West, which explains why it has mediated many conflicts and disputes in the past. The visit of others such as the Syrian foreign Minister Walid Al Mua’lem shows that Syria and Qatar have good relations and sometimes are bonded by common interests. The Iranian foreign minister expressed optimism pertaining to the improved relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia.
Guest, Man # 2
The positive relations between Tehran and Riyadh serve the interests of the region. My trip to Saudi Arabia is aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and increasing cooperation between the two countries.
Reporter, Man # 1
Political analysts believe that the Iranian positive attitude towards its neighbors shows that it wished to protect itself from Western threats. Iran wants to have better relations with Riyadh even if it had to make some compromises.
Guest, Man # 3
The creation of any organization in the Middle East can never have a significant impact unless it is comprehensive and includes the major players of the region. Without a doubt that Saudi Arabia is a major player. Without a doubt, its role within such an organization will have a positive outcome on its regional and international roles. Therefore, there are no countries in the region that are trying to bypass Saudi Arabia.
Reporter, Man # 1
It seems that Iran has the desire to normalize its relations with Riyadh, especially if the visit of the Iranian foreign minister to Saudi Arabia materializes. However, there are many questions as to whether Saudi Arabia trusts Iran’s intentions to improve relations. Iran is trying to protect itself from western threats by recruiting its allies in the region to mediate diplomatic efforts with Saudi Arabia. Redah Al Basha, Dubai Television, Tehran.
Sharing oil wealth in Iraq
Baghdad TV, IraqPresenter, Male #1
Basra’s Governor, Shiltagh Abood, said that allowing foreign companies to invest in the province will help boost development efforts. Meanwhile, the Iraqi government said that it will allocate half a dollar for each oil barrel produced in the province. The oil revenues will be put in a special development fund for the province.
Reporter, Male #2
Despite the fact that a year has passed since the provincial elections were held in Basra and despite the stability witnessed there, the residents are still suffering from the lack of public services. The remnants of wars in Basra have transformed life in the province into a daily struggle strained by the city’s heavily-damaged infrastructure.
Guest, Female #1
We are not gaining anything from these oil deals. We are not getting anything out of them.
Reporter, Male #2
The hardship of life was even felt by those living in areas, which until recent months were described as “upscale neighborhoods.” In addition to poverty, the province is suffering from pollution.
Guest, Male #3
Is this Iraq? Is this an oil-producing country? It’s true that security is no longer an issue here. The province is secure. It’s safe to walk in the street or travel anywhere in the province. Yes, we do have security but there’s no use.
Reporter, Male #1
Iraq is an oil-producing country.
Guest, Male #3
Yes, it’s an oil producing country; I’m not disputing this fact. Brother, look around you! Do they expect us to live in this polluted area? Do they want us to sleep in the midst of toxic waste? Is this really an oil-producing country?
Reporter, Male #2
It’s a known fact that nearly 70% of Iraq’s oil revenues come from the country’s southern oil fields near the province of Basra. However, Basra has not reaped the benefits of such oil production in the South. The Head of the Basra’s Provincial Council, Jabbar Amin Jaber, said that his council doesn’t object to the presence of foreign companies in the province, so that they can provide services to the residents.
Guest, Male #4
If the oil contracts are productive and beneficial for the Iraqis, then we welcome them. By the same token, if these contracts are unfavorable to the Iraqis, then we will reject them. We support the foreign companies that are working in Iraq, especially those working in the oil fields for investment and oil production. We need large sums of money in order to build Iraq.
Reporter, Male #2
Meanwhile, Basra’s Governor, Shiltagh Abood, said that the presence of foreign companies in Basra will help boost development efforts in the province at the various levels, including the cultural and social.
Guest, Male #5
The Foreign companies will not only participate at the oil production level but they will also participate at the economic, cultural, and environmental levels as well. They will cooperate with us. They may help establish a cultural center, pave a local street, or they may help in other ways. They will play an active role in Basra’s daily life. They will live among us in the province. They will not live in remote areas, such as Rumaila or others. Their presence will be felt in Basra.
Reporter, Male #2
The governor of Basra further said that the Iraqi government will allocate half a dollar for each oil barrel produced in the province. The revenues will be put in a special development fund for the province.
Guest, Male #5
Basra is a large, important, and strategic city. Basra has suffered tremendously due to the consecutive wars. The province has witnessed three wars. Basra has suffered more than any of the other Iraqi provinces. The province needs financial subsidies. Thank God, his Excellency the Prime Minister and the federal government are now paying special attention to Basra. They decided to start a special fund for Basra. This fund is different from the one that was established in other provinces. Unlike Basra, other provinces didn’t witness as many wars and catastrophes. In addition, Basra is larger, in area and population, than the rest of the Iraqi provinces. The province also enjoys an economic advantage over the other provinces, as it has an oil company. The government is allocating half a dollar to the province for each oil barrel produced. This is a small amount but we, the people of Basra, are not greedy.
Reporter, Male #2
The situation in Basra has reached an alarming level of deterioration. In the aftermath of the latest provincial elections, the residents have not seen any improvement in the level of public services. It seems that all these promises were nothing but slogans aimed at rallying support for political purposes. Amidst the lack of public services and poverty, hardship has become a reality of daily life in many parts of the province. The residents need more than empty promises: They need real actions that will help improve public services in their province.
Tensions on the rise between Turkey & Israel
Al-Alam TV, IranPresenter, Male # 1
There is no way to hide the tension between Turkey and Israel. Even the Turkish ship Alanya, docked in the occupied port of Eilat, and doesn’t conceal the strain in their relationship. Erdogan has visited Tehran.
Correspondent, Male #2
These days, some special guests from NATO are roaming around in this quiet junction of the Mediterranean Sea. Captain Itali of the NATO forces departed with his crew from the NATO headquarters in Napoli. But what is more concerning is the arrival of the Turkish Navy T.C Alanya to the headquarters of the Navy in Eilat. Yes, specifically in these unprecedented days of tension between Ankara and Jerusalem. The Turkish Navy chose to send the Alanya ship with a primary mission to remove mines. In coordination with the Israeli Navy, this mission’s purpose is to increase cooperation, and Israelis see in the arrival of the Turkish ship a mere symbolic gesture. The ship is coming to promote its Navy in a sector of the Red Sea and to coordinate with the rest of the NATO ships. This will include removing mines and combating terrorism in the Red Sea. While they relax in Eilat, they scream in Istanbul. Hundreds of demonstrators walked towards the Israeli consulate in Istanbul and burned Israeli flags in solidarity with the protests in Jerusalem, and in protest of Israel’s “Operation Cast Lead”.
Guest, Male # 3
We will raise our voices until the Israeli occupier withdraws from Jerusalem. And we shall demonstrate until the liberation of the Al-Aqsa mosque.
Correspondent, Male # 2
And if this was insufficient, the president of the Turkish government goes at it again.

Weapons of mass destruction have been used in Gaza. And this is the reality on the ground. Phosphor bombs and weapons of mass destruction have been used; can we see that and remain quiet?
Correspondent, Male # 2
Those who obligated the Turkish Army to cancel its joint Air Force drill "The Anatolian Eagle with the Israeli Air Force in the last weeks, their influence has now led to the halt of all security trade with Turkey. And instead the Israeli army has begun making agreements with the Syrian army. Ardogan has as well descended on Tehran to introduce everyone to his new companions in the region. The Turkish ship Alania left the Navy headquarters in Eilat. NATO had finally included one of Israel’s Navy ships in its rounds in the Mediterranean Sea. While relations with Turkey have been cut off, NATO has become the essential channel of communication between the Israeli and Turkish Armies.

Al -Qaeda and Taliban Link
France 24, FrancePresenter, Male #1

This is the last police headquarter before entering the region of the Pakistani tribes.
A region controlled by rebels. We have an appointment with one of the Al-Qaeda fighters in an hour. In the company of some armed men, we are now just a few kilometers away from the border with Afghanistan. We are approaching our meet-up location, and we have to continue our way on foot in these mountainous roads. We arrived half an hour later. Two armed men were waiting for us, and this man is in charge of protecting his leader during the interview.

Even though security measures have been heightened in large cities, we can still execute our bombings and we still easily accomplish our goals. We have many resources and we use suicide bombers who are ready for death.

He considers security forces to be the only targets for the bombings even though hundreds of civilians have perished in them.
Guest, Male #2
The Taliban and Al-Qaeda don’t want to kill civilians, but it’s not our fault if innocent people are killed in the bombings. It’s an indication that they need to find the path to God.

This man confirms that there will be more bombings as long as the government continues to fight the Taliban in Waziristan.

After removing the secrecy around some French documents which questioned the belief that Islamic militants were the ones responsible for a bombing that took place in Karachi in 2002, and that took the lives of 11 French citizens. French judges are currently studying a theory that it was Pakistani soldiers who ordered the attack after a struggle over the payment of commissions relating to the construction of a French center.
