Pakistan suicide bombing kills anti-Taliban mayor
Dubai TV, UAEPresenter, Female #1
In Pakistan, violence is like a silent killer, waiting for an opportunity to strike. Today, a booby-trapped car detonated in a busy market in the suburb of Peshawar northeast of Pakistan, killing 13 people and injuring dozens of others. This incident may bring the country closer to a civil war, which is further fueled by the military offensive in Waziristan. The Mayor of Mateni, who has been known for his long stand against the Taliban, was killed in the blast. The mayor has formed an anti-Taliban “Awakening Force.” Our correspondent, Mahyub Khuder, reports from Islamabad.

“It’s a battle for life and death,” for those listed in the Taliban’s list of intended targets. Abdul-Malki Khan, the Mayor of Mateni in the suburb of Peshware was killed in front of his home in a suicide car bomb attack. In addition, several people were killed and several others were wounded in the blast. The targeting of Khan was not coincidental, as the mayor has been known for his long stand against the Taliban. The mayor also formed a local “Awakening Force” to fight the Taliban.

Today, they targeted a man, who formed a militia against the Taliban. The militia is being supported and funded by the Pakistani army. The mayor’s death is a major blow to the government. This indicates that the security situation is heading towards further deterioration.

The Pakistani army has regained control of the region of Makin, which is the birthplace of Baitullah Mehsud, the former leader of the Taliban. The army had already seized control of the provinces of Kodki, Sararoga, and Kamigraham. The Taliban has been increasingly losing momentum. The Pakistani government announced that they will bring their offensive, which is dubbed “Operation Path to Salvation” in Waziristan, to an end by the middle of next December.
Guest, Male #2
I don’t see a decisive victory being achieved in Waziristan. The army will likely seize control of key Taliban positions in Waziristan. However, this doesn’t mean that this war will come to an end soon. The rebels turned the war into a guerrilla warf, which usually takes a very long time before letting up.
Reporter, Male #1
More than 400 armed Taliban fighters have been killed during the past 23 days in clashes with the Pakistani army. This news comes amidst speculation over the fate of the Taliban Leader, Hakimullah Mehsud, and his followers, who are trying to move the war inside Pakistani cities. It seems they will not be “raising the white flag” any time soon. Amidst government’s optimism and Taliban’s endurance, observers doubt that the army will be able to achieve a decisive victory in Waziristan. This reality on the ground may help push the country into an unprecedented cycle of security deterioration, which is causing a great fear among the Pakistani public. Palestinian children & Israel's Separation Wall
Al Jazeera, QatarPresenter, Male #1
The world that saw the collapse of the Berlin Wall 20 years ago has been witnessing for years the construction of another separation wall being built by Israel on the occupied Palestinian territories.
Presenter, Female #1
This wall continues to be built, and nothing stands in front of it but weekly protests.
Presenter, Male #1
The People’s Committee for Resisting the Wall reiterated that this wall will be brought down just like the one in Berlin.
Presenter, Female #1
Our correspondent Jifara al-Budiri gives an insight on Palestinians’ suffering caused by the wall.
Reporter, Female #1
These people are not going for a stroll. They are waiting anxiously for their family members in front of the gate of the separation wall that encircles the nursery school in the town of Abu Dis in eastern occupied Jerusalem.
Guest, Male #1
Before the wall, we used to take the kids in the morning by car to school and pick them back up. We usually wait here every morning at 11:45, ever since the wall was built, we have to wait. Today, for example, we arrived at noon when they sometimes open the gate, other times they won’t open it until 12.30pm or 1pm.
Reporter, Female #1
An hour later, the children came out on the order of an Israeli soldier. They are below 5 years of age, and they came out hoping to go home soon before the soldier closes this gate.
Reporter, Female #1
Well, just tell me why you’re closing it? Let me talk to the nun.
Guest, Male #2
You can talk to her later.
Reporter, Female #1
But why?
Guest, Male #2
I have work to do. I am not here to do…
Reporter, Female #1
Despite all that, the children have no fear but an insistence to continue their education.
Guest, Female #1
I don’t like the army, but I love school.
Reporter, Female #1
Do you want to stay in it? In this very spot, not only a residential building is being divided by the wall, but its residents are trapped behind barbed wire. Worse yet, the residents were forbidden to talk to the media, and threatened to be jailed if they did.
Guest, Male #4
If someone comes and takes pictures and they see him, he’d be in trouble. No one is allowed to take pictures here.
Reporter, Female #1
Even though the International Court of Justice in the Hague confirms that building the separation wall is illegal, Israel continues to build it under the pretext of security issues. The wall’s length has reached 770 kilometers, 80% of it is in the West Bank and not along the borders drawn in 1967
Guest, Male #3
The anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall is an occasion to reiterate the importance for the racist separation wall to fall down in the occupied territories. Hague court resolution is the best way that should be used immediately in this case. We should turn to this resolution by the United Nations and immediately demand sanctions on Israel.
Reporter, Female #1
This policy has not undermined the people’s will to confront the wall. Many civil movements have appeared, in which Palestinians and foreign supporters have used numerous methods to confront the wall, the latest of which was on Friday. Young people in Bal’ein village managed to remove a part of the concrete cement. The result, as usual, was tear bombs and water hoses used by the occupation forces. They insisted on seizing the land and forbidding the residents from reaching their homes and families. Wall after wall inside the wall. While the world is celebrating the fall of walls, it silently approves the construction of other walls on a land where nothing but crumbs are left, and talks about human rights and justice. This is the most outstanding façade of their kind of human rights and justice. Jufara al-Budiri, Aljazeera, from Abu Dis town, eastern occupied Jerusalem.
Palestinians warn of violence if peace efforts fail
Press TV, IranPalestinians say that Israeli settlement construction must end as a precondition to resume peace talks with Tel Aviv, something Israel rejects. The United States had previously promised to meet the Palestinian demand, and the PA has stated that it will hold the US responsible for the consequences for its failure to revive the peace process.
Future of Palestinian Authority Is in Question
IBA, IsraelHundreds of Palestinians gathered in Ramallah to express their support for Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas who will not be seeking reelection in January. Rumors abound that Abbas may quit before election day, disband the PA and declare the peace process dead. At which point Israel will have to assume full responsibly for the Palestinians.
Israel prevents medical supplies from reaching Gaza
Al Aqsa, GazaPresenter, Man # 1
Officials from the Palestinian health Ministry said that the occupation forces have prevented the World Heath Organization from sending medical equipments to Hospitals in Gaza. This will lead to negative impact on hospital patients who need to undergo coronary bypass surgery procedures. An American medical team visited Gaza, and reiterated that the health conditions there are shocking due the two year old siege imposed on it.
Reporter, Man # 2
Even the sick in Gaza are not spared from Zionist recklessness which also affects hospitals and medical clinics. Hundreds of Palestinians in Gaza had died because they were prevented from traveling to seek medical treatment or due to lack of medications. An official from the World Health Organization reiterated that the Zionist entity has prevented for the fourth time the organization from sending $800,000 worth of medical equipments to hospitals in Gaza through the Abu Salem crossing point. This happened despite the fact that the organization had arranged in advance to have equipments sent to Hospitals in Gaza. To add insult to injury, the occupation soldiers were tempering with these medical equipments before demanding that they be sent back to where they came from. The medical situation in Gaza is difficult due to the siege, which shocked an American medical team that was on a visit there. They demanded that American policy-makers visit Gaza to see the affects of the siege on the people and talk directly to the victims.
Guest, Man # 3
We have seen the devastating effects of the war and siege that have been imposed on the Palestinians, not to mention the psychological impact. In addition there is a shortage of necessary medical equipments and people are not allowed to travel abroad to seek medical attention. I appeal to our government to come to Gaza and see what we saw, and talk to those who we talked to.
Reporter, Man # 2
Local and international Human Rights organizations agree that what Palestinians are being subjected to in Gaza are crimes and unbearable tragedy. However Palestinians lives have not improved which shows that these reports are nothing but ink on paper.
Saudis regain control of Mt. Dokhan
BBC Arabic, UKPresenter, Female #1
Saudi Arabia has announced that it has regained control of the territory in Jabal al-Dukhan, on the border between its territories and Yemen, which was previously infiltrated by Yemeni Houthi rebel. Saudi Deputy Minister for Defense and Airforce, Emir Khaled bin Sultan stated that Saudi forces are currently moping off the area from the rebels.
Correspondent, Male # 1
Saudi Arabia announced its complete control over Jabal al-Dukhan in the border area with Yemen and stated that it is in the process of clearing it of the Houthi infiltrators. In images broadcast by the official Saudi television station, the Saudi Deputy Minister for Defense, Emir Khaled bin Sultan bin Abdul Aziz made an announcement in the border region of al-Khoba in the presence of his soldiers and the commanders of the army. The Emir seized the opportunity to reiterate that the moping operation had targeted gangs and not the Yemini system. The price of that operation was the life of 3 Saudi officers, and the injury of others. He denied the claim that 4 missing Saudi officers had become hostages in the hands of the Houthis. The Houthis, on the other hand, have denied what they have described as Saudi allegations, and confirmed that the Yemeni villages are being subjected to heavy bombardment by Saudi forces.
Guest, Male # 2
So far, and according to a new press release, Saudi airplanes have targeted the villages of al-Malahaid, al-Husama, Diryat Sheda, and Yemeni villages on the border with Saudi Arabia, al-Qobas and el-Razeh. In one evening alone, more than 30 air raids were carried out on our regions. This is happening inside Yemen, and the aggression is obvious.
Yemeni blood is not water.
Correspondent, Male # 1
Although warnings have come from the inside and the outside against Saudi involvement in the conflict between the Houthis and the Yemeni government, Riyadh is not concerned by the lack of stability in Yemen.
Guest, Male # 3
First of all, Saudis didn’t begin these provocative actions; they began with the Houthis who tried to establish a base for themselves in the region of Jabal al-Dukhan. They are the ones who began harassing the Saudi border forces. And this is when the Saudi response was initiated, and it will continue until the danger is completely removed from the Saudi border.

In Sana'a, the Yemeni government rushed to confirm that a Sukhoi fighter jet had crashed because of a mechanical problem near rebel strongholds in the Saada province in the north of the country. In a statement issued by the rebels, they claimed that they downed the jet in the mountainous province that has witnessed most of the conflict. This is the third time the Houthis have managed to shoot down a fighter jet since the Yemeni Army began its “Operation Scorched Earth” against them last August. According to observers, Yemen that used to be described as happy is no longer that way. It is now facing the Houthi insurgency in the North, separatist feelings in the South and constant threats from Al-Qaeda after the movement was shunned in Yemen and Saudi Arabia. Ashraf Nagi, BBC.
Iraq adopts new election law
Al Arabiya TV, UAEPresenter, Female #1
Several political parties and blocs in Iraq are lobbying with secular slogans ahead of the upcoming elections. Among these coalitions is the Iraqi National Movement led by Iyad Alawi. The new coalition includes several influential political blocs. Samir Yusif has the details in the following report.
Reporter, Male #1
Iyad Alawi decided to enter the upcoming parliamentary elections with a different approach. Alawi has entered previous elections alone under the Iraqi Accord List.
Today, he joined forces with political blocs from the various sects, in an attempt to win as many parliamentary seats as possible.
Guest, Male #2
There are nearly 40 political parties who have joined the coalition. They have come together in the name of national unity.
Reporter, Male #1
Among the most prominent political figures that joined Alawi’s coalition are: Salih al-Mutlaq, Tarik al-Hashemi and Rafii al-Isawai. The coalition is also seeking to attract other political figures, such as the Iraqi Minister of Interior, Jawad al-Bulani. Al-Bulani is among the most prominent figures expected to join the Iraqi National Coalition, led by Iyad Alawi.
Guest, Male #2
The coalition includes our brothers: Tarik al-Haskemi, Rafii al-Isawi, Huseein Sha’lan, and Iskandar Watfut from the Province of Babel. In addition, the coalition includes several key tribal leaders, such as Sheikh Abdaallah al-Humaidi, and Abu Saif Ossam al-Nujaifi. Amir Ruba’a has also joined the coalition.
Reporter, Male #1
The shakeup also included 7 political figures, who split from the Iraqi National List.
While some have joined other election lists, others formed new independent political blocs.
Guest, Male #4
The Iraqi List is no longer a leading political bloc. The Iraqi List is plagued by favoritism and individualism. The List lost some of its foundation principles, which are imperative for the building of the Iraqi National Project.
Reporter, Male #1
The most notable changes witnessed in the position of the Iraqi National List is Alawi’s latest visit to Iran, which has surprised many. This news comes despite the fact that Alawi has encountered many problems with Tehran during his tenure as Prime Minister of Iraq. Alawi has, once again, issued anti-Iranian statements during the past few days.

Basra residents waits for oil dividens
Al Sharqiya TV, IraqPresenter, Male #1
Basra city, Iraq’s only harbor that was once famous for being the prosperous “bride of the Gulf”, is witnessing relative security stability, but still suffers from neglected public services as well as water shortage. Swage water flows in the ancient canals of Basra, while electricity continues to be cut. And there is no alternative economic resource but oil. However, the citizens here say that despite the improvement of the security situation in the city, they do not feel that they are living in a country with an abundance of oil.
Guest, Female #1
We are not benefiting from anything here. We’re not benefiting from the oil companies, nor the oil.
Guest, Male #1
Is this what we’re supposed to get from oil in Iraq? It’s true that we do have stability, we can go out and do whatever we wish, and there is security. It’s true that this is the country of oil, but what good comes from it? Look, my brother, look what’s happening here, would anybody want to live here?
Guest, Male #2
We support the foreign companies that work in Iraq, especially in the oil fields where they invest and increase the oil production here. We need a lot of money to rebuild Iraq. If the contracts are productive and benefit the Iraqi side, then we welcome them. If the contracts are unfair and violate Iraq’s rights then we won’t accept them.
Guest, Male #3
Al Basra is a large city, and it’s a strategically important city. It has been immensely damaged in the wars: three wars have ravaged it. Other provinces have not been damaged like Basra. The city needs large financial appropriations. Thank God, the Prime Minister and the unity government have paid attention to this and they want to appropriate special financial aid to Basra that is different from other provinces that have not been through wars. These provinces did not go through wars, and they do not have catastrophes. They have smaller populations and they are smaller in size than Basra. Basra has an oil company, and they have decided to allocate half a dollar for every barrel of oil produced to the province, even though it is very little, we in Basra are content. This company does not only contribute to the oil industry, but will also contribute to the economical, cultural and environmental sectors in Basra. They will cooperate with us and they will have a role in opening a cultural center here, paving a street there, and contributing to our well-being. They will not be placed in Roumaila, or a place far from civilization. The effects of their work will have an effect on the city.
Chechens revive ancient fashions
Russia Today, RussiaPresenter, Woman # 1
The Chechen Republic is always in the news. This time, Chechnya makes its mark in the fashion industry. Its capital Grozny witnessed its first wedding fashion show, showing dresses designed with folkloric styles from the Caucuses. Our reporter Omar Al Sulah attended the show and prepared the following report.
Reporter, Man # 2
It is a fashion show for Chechen wedding dresses, but it is not in Paris, Rome or in any fashion capital in the world. The show took place at the premier centre for design in the heart of the Chechen capital of Grozny. White dresses in different designs reflecting the conservative Chechen fashion, as well as the Caucuses folkloric traditions were on display.
Guest, Man # 3
“Chechen women are the most beautiful in the world and if we dress them up in accordance with our traditions, it will only multiply their beauty.”
Reporter, Man # 2
Beautiful, elegant and graceful women were dressed in traditional Chechen wedding dresses, marking their own place in the world of fashion. Some world famous designers such as Roberto Cavalli, Slava Zaytzev and others attended the Chechen fashion show. This is the first fashion show in Chechnya and it seemed like a Caucuses wedding beauty pageant.
Guest, Man # 3
It is very important to support these activities by organizing fashion shows which play an important role in protecting the culture of this region. At the same time these fashion shows help push the country towards a more promising future.
Reporter, Man # 2
Arab songs were also played at this fashion show and were represented by the voice of the famous Lebanese singer Merriam Fares. The Chechen fashion has returned in the form of white wedding dresses. Women here have different choices of wedding the dresses to pick from.
Guest, Woman # 1
Chechen wedding dresses are unique because they reflect the traditions of our ancestors. The belt goes around the bride’s waist; her head must be covered while her braids are hanging.
Reporter, Man # 2
Shop owners of modern wedding dresses are worried that they will go out of business if people start demanding traditional wedding dresses, especially after the Republic’s. President Ramzan Kadyrov has adopted a project to return to traditional Chechen fashion. All women in the world are beautiful, but women at the Caucuses are known for their unique beauty which combines softness and toughness at the same time. Just imagine how beautiful they will be in white wedding dresses. They truly add to the brightness and purity of whiteness. From the Chechen capital of Grozny, Omar Al Salh, Russia Today.
