Sarah Elgart

Bio:
Choreographer, Director and Producer Sarah Elgart has created work for stage, film. television, music videos, circus alternative venues and more. In film and television she has worked with noted directors including Anton Corbijn, Curtis Hanson, David Lynch, Bob Giraldi and others and recording artists including Depeche Mode, Baby Face, George Harrison and the Traveling Willburies. Elgart served for four years as Performance Producer, Music Department Head, and Segment Director for The Disney Channel on an award winning children’s show. Elgart has over 20 years experince creating film and theater with a range of communities including recovering substance abusers, transitional homeless women, maximum security women inmates, children in hospital, and more. In 1991 she founded La Boca Performance Space and MADRES, an internationally acclaimed performance group of transitional homeless women at the Sunshine Mission/Casa de Rosas, LA’s first shelter and SRO hotel for homeless women. In addition to touring work by MADRES, La Boca produced and presented performances by international theatre and dance companies such as Min Tanaka, Iso, Los Angeles Poverty Department and more. From 1998-2002 Elgart worked at Children’s Hospital LA as an independent artist-in-residence where she conceived of “The Dream Project”. As such she worked with young people facing critical and terminal illness, creating over 20 short films and two anthologies of written texts based on their hopes, dreams and fears as they faced an uncertain future. “The Dream Project” premiered at AFI and went on to show at festivals internationally to critical acclaim. Elgart is also Co-Founder of Make a Film Foundation (MAFF), a non-profit organization that pairs mentors from the film community with young people facing illness to help them create their own short films. MAFF just completed it’s short film “Put it in a Book”, written by and starring Jabril Muhammad, an 18 year old with sickel cell anemia. Jabril worked with mentors such as Isaiah Washington and Don D. Scott and acted alongside seasoned actors including Kerry Washington and Michael Ealy. “Put it in a Book” was directed by award winning director Rodrigo Garcia, and produced by Sarah Elgart and Tamika Lamison. Elgart has directed for Court TV, The Disney Channel, Women in Film and more, and recently has directed music videos for recording artists including Mia Doi Todd, Angela Luna, and Clara Bellar.

On 9/11 she was in recovery at CHLA and her visitng Muslim parents, too frightened to leave their apartment, did not visit her for several weeks.
