In 4REAL Kenya, Sol takes international hip hop star K’naan into Kibera, the largest slum in East Africa, where they meet local hero Salim Mohamed. Salim shows them Carolina for Kibera, the medical clinic he helps run, and the community development soccer program he coordinates for over 4,000 kids.
While there, K’naan, a Somalian refugee now living in Toronto, films his first video, “Soobox,” capturing the spirit of fellow refugees in Little Somalia in Kenya’s Eastleigh, not too far away from Kibera. In "Soobox," K'naan calls to Somali warlords to "come out with it" and put down their guns. The production draws a crowd that grows and grows until Salim helps K’naan and his crew gain control over the situation and move to a different location.
During their visit, K’naan and Sol see beauty and dignity in the most unexpected places and are forever changed by Salim’s incredible spirit as he brings education, opportunity and health to a place that few people want anything to do with. “Salim has been teaching me a lot. He’s teaching me about purpose and passion and the beauty in not living for self, living for more then self, living for a people, a nation, a world,” K’naan says.
