On February 17, 2008, parliament proclaimed Kosovo's independence. People rejoiced in the streets and fell into each other's arms. For many years the Albanian population of Kosovo lived under the yoke of the Serbians; many were either deported or left the country in search of refuge.
The stationmaster of Pristina recounts the night he was rounded up on the train platform of the capital city together with thousands of others. Heavily armed Serbians were using trains to deport Albanians. "They all had to hand in their belongings. We were packed in a compartment, we could hardly breathe."
