This special preview from Season Two of The Freedom Files, “Freedom from Abuse of Power: Torture and Unlawful Imprisonment” illustrates how our bedrock right of due process is being eroded, and how torture and extraordinary rendition are being illegally used by our government in the “war on terror.” The program outlines the history of habeas corpus and shows how time-honored protections against arbitrary imprisonment are being undermined. A former CIA official discusses the origins of extraordinary rendition, and describes how the practice expanded after Sept. 11 to include torture and brutal interrogations ordered by the U.S. and conducted in secret overseas prisons.

The Freedom Files
Season Two of the series premieres this fall with a slate of nine programs on the death penalty, same-sex marriage, same-sex parenting, voting rights, immigrants’ rights, surveillance, sex education, the school-to-prison pipeline, and unlawful imprisonment, torture and habeas corpus.  Filmmaker and political activist Robert Greenwald, whose ground-breaking political films include Iraq for Sale: The War Profiteers and Outfoxed: Rupert Murdoch’s War on Journalism, is the executive producer of the series. Richard Ray Perez, an award-winning documentary filmmaker (Unprecedented: The 2000 Presidential Election), lead the production team for Season Two.
