Stella Rotaru, with her International Organization for Migration, is fighting the international sex trade. Stella is from Moldova, a former Soviet republic so poor that over one quarter of the population has emigrated. The country is a prime source for girls trafficked into prostitution. Within a few years, Stella has become the "go to" person for many girls who have been tricked and sold into prostitution with the false promise of a job abroad - often in the Middle East. As a young Moldovan herself from a similar background, the girls trust her.

This film tells the story of some of these girls and Stella's determination to help them. Each story is unique in its tragedy and drama but they have all the same themes - abduction, humiliation, rape, desperation. The film shows how and why they are induced or forced into being trafficked, shows how Stella works to repatriate them and helps them escape from their desperate plight. Stella also helps the women with the difficult task of adjusting to a life back home where many are rejected by their family and friends, and travels the country trying to educate young girls about the dangers of trafficking.

About Al Jazeera - Witness

Rageh Omaar presents Witness, a half-hour daily documentary series which features short, specially commissioned or acquired films gathered from independent filmmakers.

Each documentary reveals the unknown lives of ordinary people, following their lives, telling their stories and portraying the challenges that confront them. Our witnesses are people in a situation or those who have observed them first hand.

The films cover conflict, belief, the past and the future and as well as bringing new stories to light they showcase the talents of a new breed of multi-skilled, frontline journalist. In the studio, Rageh will further explore the issues raised in the films, with expert guests on the subject matter and the filmmakers themselves.
