This poignant film is the story of two men: white, middle-class Miguel, and black favela-dweller Jorge, who meet as boys through their fathers’ passion for music. Miguel grows up to become a government official, and Jorge becomes a drug lord. By chance, their friendship is renewed during a lengthy incarceration under the military dictatorship of the mid-1970’s.

Director Lúcia Murat offers a bold commentary on the lowest caste of society in contemporary Rio de Janeiro when, as adults, Miguel and Jorge discover that their lives have more in common than they ever realized. Almost Brothers is a rich exploration of the seemingly unbridgeable chasm between the social classes of Brazil.
