This lyrical gem of a film takes place in Beaufort Wes a small town in the Karoo, an arid stretch of land in South Africa. Gert Vlok Nel lives in this obscure place, but has managed to become one of South Africa's most celebrated poets and troubadors. His works are deeply personal, and his lovely songs are sung in a weary, yet sweet voice. Beautiful in Beaufort Wes is a portrait of Nel, told in song and poetry, but it is also a portrait of life in this small town where an array of characters go about their lives, and share with us their hopes, their regrets, and their small triumphs.
