Being Caribou
Being Caribou vividly depicts a story of animal migration that goes back as far as 27,000 years. Environmentalist Leanne Allison and wildlife biologist Karsten Heuer follow a herd of 120,000 caribou on foot, across 1,500 kilometres of rugged Arctic tundra. The husband-and-wife team wants to raise awareness of threats to the caribou's survival. At stake is the herd’s delicate habitat, which could be devastated if proposed oil and gas development goes ahead in the caribou’s calving grounds in Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.
Combining a mix of spectacular nature footage and intimate video diaries, Being Caribou allows a glimpse into a landscape and a way of ‘being human’ rarely, if ever, captured on such a unique journey. The experience transformed the team, and motivated them to meet with senators on Capitol Hill one short week after returning with the caribou to their winter range in the Central Yukon.
Being Caribou is supported by Earthjustice, the nation's largest nonprofit environmental law firm. Protecting natural resources and the right of all people to a healthy environment, because, as their motto says, "the earth needs a good lawyer."
