International Dateline: In Katrina's Wake
Regions: North America

Prepare to be horrified. Two years after Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans flooding the city, killing 1500 people and leaving many more homeless, much of the jazz capital still lies in ruins. Despite the billions poured into reconstruction, many people are now forced to live on the streets, as their homes still haven't been rebuilt and rental prices have soared.

Dateline journalist David Brill travels to New Orleans to find out why rebuilding is taking so long. He discovers that those who were hit hardest by Katrina, the poor, mostly black residents, are the ones suffering the most. Some manage to hold down fulltime jobs, while others are seriously depressed, so its no suprise that suicide rates in the city have doubled since the hurricane hit.

What becomes clear through Brill's report is that rebuilding a city is an incredibly complex process, with bureaucratic buck-passing between the State and Federal governments largely to blame.

About International Dateline

SBS Dateline, which began in 1984, is Australia's longest-running international current affairs program. It has a well-earned reputation for authoritative and incisive reporting. Dateline has taken the traditional way of producing TV current affairs and turned it on its head. Reporters who used to travel with a cameraperson and sound recordist now travel alone and have the responsibility of both filming and reporting their stories. The reporters became video-journalists, gaining access to people and places that the conventional camera crews cannot.
