This International Dateline episode includes four segments: Curitiba - City of Dreams, Terrorism Debate, Dame Edna, and Reinado on the Line.
Curitiba - City of Dreams
Dateline's Olivia Rousset has visited Brazil's exemplary megalopolis, Curitiba. A city of three million people where, in a recent survey, 99% of the people asked said they were happy with the city. This is quite impressive for a sprawling modern city where public transport pays for itself and runs on time. Olivia speaks to Jaime Lerner, the wizard behind this emerald city where people and sheep live happily side by side.
Terrorism Debate
It has now been five years since the attacks of September 11. With two-thirds of all Americans presently unconvinced that the US is winning the war on terror and the Attorney-General Alberto Gonzalez warning that another attack is inevitable, Dateline examines many of the issues surrounding the United States' present stance on terror. To discuss the risks of future attacks, the war on terror and the possible causes, Dateline's George Negus is joined by US counter-terrorism specialist, Malcolm W. Nance in their studio and from London, terrorism expert, Loretta Napoleoni.
Dame Edna
Dateline's Ginny Stein takes a look at Pakistan's version of Dame Edna Everage – a cross dressing TV host whose made it her mission in life to challenge Pakistan's establishment. Comedian Ali Saleem transforms himself into Begum Ali, a high-society dame with a sharp tongue and a penchant for fancy saris and long eyelashes.
Reinado on the Line
In East Timor, rebel leader Major Alfredo Reinado, along with 56 other prisoners, was somehow able to walk out of jail in Dili. Dateline's David O'Shea was with Reinado and got caught in the cross-fire when the rebel leader fired the first shots of the violence. He was also on hand when Reinado was arrested, three weeks ago. Still on the run, Reinado out of the blue, called David by mobile from wherever it is that he's hiding in the hills above Dili. In an exclusive interview, David spoke with Reinado about his whereabouts, his objectives and his allegiances.
About International Dateline
SBS Dateline, which began in 1984, is Australia's longest-running international current affairs program. It has a well-earned reputation for authoritative and incisive reporting. Dateline has taken the traditional way of producing TV current affairs and turned it on its head. Reporters who used to travel with a cameraperson and sound recordist now travel alone and have the responsibility of both filming and reporting their stories. The reporters became video-journalists, gaining access to people and places that the conventional camera crews cannot.
