This International Dateline episode includes three segments: Somalia, Bill Heffernan Interview, and Maalika - Afar Angel.

Somalia
Dateline's Thom Cookes and SBS Radio journalist Issa Farah fly into Somalia's temporary 'capital' of Jowhar along with a delegation of African Union diplomats. The opening of the African Union embassy is touted as a first sign of stability after 14 years of anarchy. The capital, Mogadishu still remains out of bounds to the relatively new president and, as Thom unfortunately finds out, Jowhar is also susceptible to rebel attack. He and Issa are forced to evacuate along with the UN staff, but not before he interviewed President Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed; an old hand in Somalia as a former warlord.

Bill Heffernan Interview
Dateline interviews Australian Government Senator, Bill Hefernan, in a follow-up to their report on the importation of beef from Brazil, a country where foot and mouth disease is endemic. Earlier this month, the Australian Federal Cabinet discussed allowing the import of beef from countries that have had outbreaks of BSE or mad cow disease. Foot and mouth only infects animals, but with mad cow disease, human health is at risk. Dateline explore the implications of this potentially hazardous decision.

Maalika - Afar Angel
Dateline's Olivia Rousset headed to the hottest place on earth to profile an inspiring woman known as Maalika, (meaning angel), aka Valerie Browning. Maalika first visited Ethiopia as a missionary nurse during the famine in the 70's. So moved by her experience, she returned, dedicating her life to the Afar people in the northern Ethiopia. Her mission is to train women to become midwives. She fears for the Afar people's future and the continued practice of female genital mutilation fuels her passion for change.

About International Dateline

SBS Dateline, which began in 1984, is Australia's longest-running international current affairs program. It has a well-earned reputation for authoritative and incisive reporting. Dateline has taken the traditional way of producing TV current affairs and turned it on its head. Reporters who used to travel with a cameraperson and sound recordist now travel alone and have the responsibility of both filming and reporting their stories. The reporters became video-journalists, gaining access to people and places that the conventional camera crews cannot.
