The Abbot of Antaiji is the story of Nölke, a Berliner by birth, who lives in the mountains of Japan, heading one of the country's largest Zen Buddhist monasteries: the Temple of Peace of Antaiji.

 

After the death of his mother, Nölke applied his mind to the meaning of life and death. As a student, he travelled to Japan and spent time at a Zen Buddhist monastery, where he studied to became a monk. During his studies he changed his name to Muho and was later appointed abbot by his monastery. Since then, he has helped the monastery's guests from Japan and elsewhere find their way on the path to enlightenment.

 

Filmmakers Martina Gawaz and Angelika Vogel spent half a year with the German Zen master, finding out how Muho copes with Buddhist monastic life.
