Robina Muqimyar, a 17 year old sprinter, is going to Athens this Summer as part of the Afghan Olympic team. Her previous results suggest that she is unlikely to emerge from the qualifying heats, but her mere participation would have been unimaginable not so long ago.
After more than twenty years of devastating Civil War, the Olympic Games symbolize a new beginning for Afghanistan. Nearly a dozen Afghan athletes are expected to make the trip to Athens. They might not go with great hopes of picking up a medal but are delighted to be part of the Olympic family once again.
