In Focus: Europe Goes Global - Aid Against AIDS
Regions: Europe

It's the Black Death of the modern age. An estimated 40 million people worldwide are infected with HIV, an increase of five million in 2003 alone. Worst affected is Sub-Saharan Africa, with infection rates as high as 40%. It has reached the stage where HIV/AIDS is endangering the economic development and long-term political stability of many African countries. In Zambia, one in two teachers is HIV positive, and 40 to 50 police officers die of AIDS-related disease each month.

This In Focus report focuses on a courageous HIV-positive policewoman in Zambia's capital, Lusaka, and her personal war on the disease. The report looks at projects supported with funding from European countries and inquires into the current status of research on a vaccination against this scourge of the 21st century - some two decades after the virus was first identified.
