The disappearance of ice-covered peaks is changing the Alps, and not just in an aesthetic sense. On Germany's highest mountain, the Zugspitze, ski-lift and snowboard operators are on red alert. Because the frost line keeps rising, they fear for the Zugspitze's reputation and future as Germany's only glacial skiing location. They are now mobilising massive technological and financial resources in a bid to prevent the snow on the Alps' northernmost glacier from melting – with doubtful success. The warming of the atmosphere and thus the death of the glaciers is likely to proceed.
