On 26 April 1986 there was a major accident in Block Four of the Chernobyl nuclear power station, releasing large quantities of radioactivity which spread over much of Europe. Even today, two decades later, the disaster continues. One fifth of the soil in Belarus, where people have traditionally lived from agriculture and market-gardening, will be contaminated for 100,000 years. The inhabitants of the affected region are dependent on help from the outside world. And yet the consequences of the accident continue to be denied, repressed, and ignored.
