Travellers today are generally armed with some kind of camera. But before the age of photography, no expedition party was complete without a painter-chronicler, an artist assigned the task of creating a visual record of what the explorers discovered. Hamburg painter Rainer Ullrich has picked up the traces of that tradition. His first chance to work as an expedition painter came in 2002 when he accompanied polar adventurer Arved Fuchs on his spectacular voyage through the Northeast Passage.
Now, Rainer Ullrich has travelled to Brazil and the Amazon Basin, filling sketchbooks with images of an extraordinary journey and the fascinating world of the rainforest.
