Within the European Union, heat and power from renewable energy sources is projected to grow by well over 300 per cent in the next 10 years. The figure is a realistic estimate by environmental bodies, the EU Commission and the multinational oil companies BP and Shell. Green energy is booming. There is hardly any other technology sector where this sort of growth is on the cards. In Germany, especially, in addition to wind power, photo-voltaic is also growing in importance. The reason is that optimized production methods have led to a substantial reduction in the costs of solar panels. The latest solar power technology is being investigated in one of Europe's sunniest spots, the Plataforma Solar de Almeria. The German Aerospace Research Center has joined forces with Spanish scientists to test ways of generating electricity from sunlight cheaply and effectively.
