A special DW report on a new approach the European Union is taking to address the seemingly endless cycle of violence in Colombia, one of the most dangerous countries in South America. Instead of conducting ineffective peace talks, the EU officials are working directly with the warring factions on the ground to stop the killing. One focus area is the middle reaches of Colombia's biggest river, the Magdalena. It is a microcosm of the region's conflicts: leftist guerillas vs. right-wing paramilitary troops, the drug cartels vs. state security forces and various other smaller factions. The constant warring over Magdalena Medio's wealth of natural resources, such as crude oil and gold, has turned them into more of a curse than a blessing and given the abject poverty of most of its inhabitants a touch of bitter irony.
