Democracy in Pakistan seems to move in strange ways. The constant back-and-forth between civilian and military rule since the country gained its independence in 1947 appears symptomatic of deeper conflicts that have yet to be resolved. In the mid-1970s, Prime Minister Ali Zulfikar Bhutto attempted to break the power of the military, but failed. After a show trial, he was hanged in 1979. During her two terms as prime minister, his daughter Benazir Bhutto took up the struggle against the military's stranglehold, but so far, to little or no avail.
