There are 40,000 coal-miners in Germany, spread across nine collieries. While the work is challenging, conditions have been improved by modern technology. However, it's still a dangerous job and the colliery emergency rescue teams have an important role. If there really is an emergency, it'll be all systems go at the emergency center in Herne in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.
