On a summer's day in Iceland in 1989, two girls are getting ready to leave for their summer jobs. But they never arrive at their destination: They have a car accident and only one of the girls survives – with severe back injuries. The film depicts the mother's desperate fight for her daughter and her worldwide search for help against paralysis. She finally manages to get the World Heath Organization and the Council of Europe on board in bringing about a global network and creating a database for methods of healing these kinds of injuries.
