New York is one of the fashion capitals of the world, but few people know that up to 75 percent of the city's garment factories are, in fact, sweatshops. The majority of workers in these sweatshops are immigrants and undocumented workers, who are particularly vulnerable to unfair labor practices, exploitation, and hazardous working conditions.
The Empire's New Clothes documents the virtual enslavement of individuals, particularly recent immigrants, who work in Manhattan's sweatshops. Sweatshop "employees" recount the abysmal health and safety conditions that they face daily, which often lead to permanent disability, psychological exhaustion and even death.
