A special night of programming about how the oil-drenched US energy policy is endangering our environment and perpetuating an unsustainable lifestyle. The evening, broadcast in 3 parts, features the Link TV premiere of Oil on Ice, which examines the battle over drilling at the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, and excerpts from End of Suburbia, a disturbing look at the future of the American way of life in the wake of diminishing oil reserves. Throughout the program, author and journalist, Richard Heinberg - whose recent book, The Party's Over: Energy Resources and the Fate of Industrial Societies, echoes similar themes - discusses the film and the issues it raises.
The evening also includes an interview with Jared Diamond, author of Collapse, an interview with Oil on Ice producer, Dale Djerassi, and an exclusive WaterPlanet broadcast of a speech by environmentalist Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., in which he accuses the Bush Administration of being "a catastrophe" for the environment. Tune in to find out how to acquire DVDs of both films and Jared Diamond's book, Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed.
PART 1
Oil on Ice
Oil on Ice examines the battle over oil development within the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge featuring the dramatic wildlife that adapted to this environment and the cultures of the Gwich’in Athabascan Indians and Inupiat Eskimos that rely on this wildlife for their subsistence.
The issue of oil extraction from the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge brings to a sharp focus the broader debate over energy conservation vs. unbridled consumption. It also dramatizes the choice between technologies based on fossil fuels and those that draw upon renewable, efficient, and non-polluting energy resources. The film states the new paradigm is a mode of living with the Earth rather than extracting from the Earth.

PART 2
The End of Suburbia (excerpts)
Since World War II North Americans have invested much of their newfound wealth in suburbia. It has promised a sense of space, affordability, family life and upward mobility. As the population of suburban sprawl has exploded in the past 50 years, so too has the suburban way of life become embedded in the American consciousness. Suburbia, and all it promises, has become the American Dream.
But as we enter the 21st century, serious questions are beginning to emerge about the sustainability of this way of life. With brutal honesty and a touch of irony, The End of Suburbia explores the American Way of Life and its prospects as the planet approaches a critical era, as global demand for fossil fuels begins to outstrip supply. World Oil Peak and the inevitable decline of fossil fuels are upon us now, some scientists and policy makers argue in this documentary.
The consequences of inaction in the face of this global crisis are enormous. What does Oil Peak mean for North America? As energy prices skyrocket in the coming years, how will the populations of suburbia react to the collapse of their dream? Are today's suburbs destined to become the slums of tomorrow? And what can be done NOW, individually and collectively, to avoid The End of Suburbia?
