In Russia, The Future Express travels from St. Petersburg via Moscow, Omsk and Novosibirsk to Khabarovsk in the Far East. A long six-day journey across the Ural Mountains and into Siberia, where there is plenty snow covered tundra to help train passengers people contemplate. A new era had dawned almost a generation ago, when the Soviet Union ceased to exist. But a resurgent new Russian nationalism has taken its place with many people. Nevertheless, many passengers on the train tell stories of nostalgia and regret about the collapse of the Soviet Union and the old ways. But younger passengers say that these complaints are normal for the old guys and the younger generation is much more optimistic about where Russian is going, although international viewers may well regard a resurgent Russia with some trepidation.
