Directed by Constantine Giannaris (From the Edge of the City)
Greece, 105 minutes
Inspired by true events in Northern Greece, Hostage explores the sensitive issue of Greek-Albanian relations through a young Albanian immigrant, Elian Scion, who has slept with his boss’s wife. Since his boss is a police officer and Elian is an illegal immigrant, revenge has no limits as the victim has no recourse. Elian is brutally abused, sodomized and imprisoned, exiting the experience hostile and shattered.
Armed with an automatic rifle and a grenade, he hijacks an intercity bus and holds seven passengers hostage as they wander up the roads of northern Greece toward the homeland Elian so desperately longs for. Trailed by armed swat teams, Elian demands a ransom of half a million euros, and safe passage to his mother’s house — far away from the nightmare he may or may not survive as they approach the Albanian border.
