For Arianna Huffington, the problem with the Republican Party is not that it is at odds with the views of progressives, but that its "lunatic fringe" has taken over the party and is at odds with the views of the American people. It is the thesis of her book: Right is Wrong: How the Lunatic Fringe Hijacked America, Shredded the Constitution and Made Us All Less Safe. 

This speech at San Francisco's Commonwealth Club is from the corresponding book tour in which she skillfully attacks the "New McCain", the misuse of  the “Fair and Balanced” credo to manipulate the truth, and advises on what Americans need to do to keep the country’s future away from what she calls “the lunatic fringe” of the Republican  Party. "Flashing back to the Reagan era is one thing," says Huffington, "but flashing back to the Dark Ages is quite another".
