Immigration (Four Hour Special)
The US border has long been a crossing point between hope and despair for the estimated 500,000 undocumented immigrants who enter this country each year. Today, there are more than 10 million undocumented immigrants living in the United States - an all-time high. These rising numbers are dividing nations, sparking protests and making immigration the most hotly debated and divisive issue in the coming elections.
PART 1 (First Two Hours)
First we take you to the border between the United States and Mexico, to meet the many forces patrolling the border in the documentary, Walking the Line. Joining host Peter Laufer, author of Wetback Nation, to discuss the immigration debate are human rights activist, Evelina Molina, and Hans Johnson, Research Fellow at the Public Policy Institute of California. Hans is a demographer who follows trends of illegal immigration in California and Molina hosts her own Spanish radio show for farm workers.
PART 2 (Second Two Hours)
In Part 2, Peter Laufer and guests examine why immigrants continue to stream across the border, how many are dying in the attempt, and whether creating jobs in Mexico, through foreign-owned factories called Maquilas, might be an answer. The film, Death on a Friendly Border, starts off this special; exploring the difficulties faced by the thousands of migrants each year attempting to make the journey across the border. Since the mid-1990s when the United States began militarizing the US-Mexican border, an average of one person a day has died trying to cross into our country. This film attempts to put a human face on this international tragedy. This segment also includes the documentary Maquila: A Tale of Two Mexicos, an exploration of corporate globalization's impact on Mexico's people and environment. The stirring documentary focuses on the quandary facing indigenous farmers in Mexico's underdeveloped, predominantly agricultural southern regions.
