On April 26th 1986 a series of explosions occurred in the energy block 4 of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, contaminating large areas of Ukraine and Russia with radioactive material and rendering them unsafe for human habitation for years or even decades to come. Some 700 thousand emergency workers, or "liquidators" at the plant tried to avoid an even greater disaster. Many of them have since died of illnesses caused by exposure to radiation.
Now, twenty five years later, a group of surviving emergency workers revisit the exclusion zone around the derelict Soviet power plant and talk to friends and acquaintances from that time. For anyone curious to visit Chernobyl there are even guided tours available to the area.
