On the one side there's the unfulfilled desire for children, on the other side inescapable poverty. It's hard to imagine children becoming commodities. In the little Greek port of Volos, for example, there is a kind of baby supermarket. This is where Greek couples who want children meet Bulgarian mothers and children and money change hands. Another example is India: a single mother gave her children to a home. She thought they would receive an education, instead they were sold to an adoption agency. Or Guatemala: children are abducted and sold to other countries. New laws will, it's hoped, curb this abuse of adoption regulations.
