The German women’s soccer team attracts millions of television viewers and is fêted by the public. The girls and young women who started playing football after World War II could only dream of such recognition: in 1955, women and girls were officially banned from playing football on German pitches. But some women bravely defied this ban.They called themselves the “wilde Mädchen”,or “wild girls”.
