Regions: Europe

To combat dependency on fossil fuel, European politicians are promoting renewable resources. The EU climate package passed in January 2008 aims to raise the compulsory quota of biofuel in all transport fuel to ten percent by 2020. Despite subsidies, European farmers are not able to produce sufficient oilseed crops to meet increased  biofuel demands. That's why vegetable oils are now being imported on a large scale. But the biofuel boom promoted by the EU threatens to destroy the livelihoods of many people in developing countries. Food prices are going up and huge palm-oil monocultures are causing deforestation and destroying traditional agriculture.
