For millions of Germans, the Canary Islands remain the most popular holiday destination. And they have much to offer: entertainment programs in the hotels and German beer right on the beaches. Just a few kilometers away, in the islands' interiors, areas of still largely untouched nature lie off the beaten tourist track. But trouble is brewing in paradise. Hotel construction is happening increasingly in nature reserves, often illegally and without building permission. Occasionally, the authorities intervene but they are up against powerful hotel owners and construction companies.
