In 2001 journalist Bob Stevens from Florida was killed because he opened a letter containing anthrax spores. Four more people died in September and October 2001 as a result of letters laced with anthrax. At the beginning of August 2008 a trail of circumstantial evidence led the authorities to an employee of a US research lab. Military research into biological weapons and defenses against them led to ever more dangerous pathogens being produced in research laboratories, including at European universities. That’s why experts have long been calling for increased security standards.
