The destruction of the ozone layer is a problem that once seemed solved. In 1987 the global community passed the “Montreal Protocol” and banned the production of CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons) in spray cans and coolants. They are considered the main causes of the ozone hole. But at the end of the 90s customs officials and environmentalists discovered that up to 20,000 tons of the long-forbidden ozone killer were being smuggled out of China illegally every year. There, CFCs can still be produced until 2010.
